Helping Readers Buy Your Book

You’ve officially hit launch window. Your book is available to preorder on retailer sites from Amazon to Bookshop. Yet your captured audience is thinking:

I went looking for your book and couldn’t find it anywhere. Sure, there’s a lonely static post on your Instagram buried under a grid, announcing a limited time Barnes & Noble preorder discount. But it’s not pinned. Your social bios and website don’t mention a book. There’s no prominent book section, no dedicated landing page, and not a single call-to-action on your podcast. So is there something to order or not?

Let me offer you a few tips to help you turn that around.

Books do not promote themselves. Even if you’re traditionally published, the publisher’s marketing resources are heavily weighted toward retailers and SEO and helping you nail an attractive cover, not converting your direct audience with CTAs.

So you have to convert them. A few tips:

  • Announce your book on your website, social media, and other platforms once it hits prelaunch
  • Display your book prominently on your website home page
  • Create a book page that features the cover, copy, endorsements, and links to a few retailers including Bookshop
  • Include a CTA at the start of your podcast episodes

A word of caution: Too many authors paralyze their own momentum waiting for physical copies to arrive so they can do a fancy photoshoot or begin promo. Stop waiting! Sacrificing months of early promo will cost you sales and momentum.

Good luck!
